Sam Darnold MIN QBVikings' Sam Darnold: Vikings won't rush to name starting QB
13m agoThe Vikings could begin the season with Darnold as the team's starting quarterback despite taking J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, ESPN reports. "We're not going to rush his development," said general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. "We're just going to do what's best for the Vikings in the short and long term."
Darnold signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Vikings as a short-term veteran starter or backup. It's hard to handicap when McCarthy may take over the starting job this soon after the draft, but it's notable the Vikings are trying to reduce expectations. Expect the quarterback battle for the Week 1 starting job to commence this summer. Still, odds are Darnold will only be the starter for a few weeks at most if McCarthy is healthy and making progress.

After four years at Arkansas, Knox transferred to South Carolina for his fifth-year senior season. He compiled a 37-312-2 receiving line for the Gamecocks. He switched positions from wide receiver to tight end in 2021. Knox joins a tight end room that includes T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt and Nick Muse in Minnesota.

"Tulu" stands at 5-foot-10 and 181 pounds and ran a 4.43 forty at the combine after leading Mississippi State in receiving with a 50-658-4 line as a senior. His main selling point for the Raiders could be his returner skills after he showed some electricity with the ball in his hands during college.

Bradley has good size at 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds and spent the final two years of his college career at South Alabama following four years in Toledo's program. He threw for 5,996 yards at South Alabama, amassing 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. In Las Vegas, Bradley slides in at the bottom of the depth chart behind Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Anthony Brown.

Edwards was just a one-year starter at Georgia and overall functioned as part of a backfield committee. He concluded his four-year collegiate career with a 391-2,082-24 rushing line. Edwards is strong in pass-protection and joins a Pittsburgh backfield that is led by Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren and newcomer Cordarrelle Patterson.

4h agoWatson is slated to sign with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Watson spent five years at Old Dominion before transferring to Memphis for his super-senior season. He led the Tigers in rushing with 192-1,152-14 on the ground and added 53-480-3 as a receiver, earning All-AAC honors. Watson joins a crowded Denver backfield depth chart that includes Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine, Jaleel McLaughlin and fifth-round rookie Audric Estime.

Farmer finally broke out of a terrible slump as he was hitting .100 (5-for-50) with a .390 OPS in his first 21 games. Farmer is splitting playing time at third base with Jose Miranda with Royce Lewis and Carlos Correa injured. Farmer will likely move to more of a bench role when Correa returns in the next few days with Willi Castro likely to get the most playing time at third base.

4m agoBenintendi went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and six RBI in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Rays.
Benintendi's huge game came out of nowhere -- not only were the two long balls his first two of the campaign, but the multi-hit effort was his first such performance since April 15. The veteran outfielder's power had dropped off dramatically in recent seasons, as he swatted just 10 home runs over 277 contests across 2022 and 2023. Saturday's performance was the sixth multi-homer effort of Benintendi's career, and his six RBI tied a career high, while the walk-off blast was his first as a major-leaguer.

9m agoCabbage went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI on Saturday against the Rockies.
Cabbage was called up to serve as Houston's 27th man for the Mexico City Series, and he was immediately slotted into the lineup to make his 2024 debut. He delivered the RBI knock in his first plate appearance, though he was pulled in the sixth inning in favor of pinch hitter Mauricio Dubon. Cabbage will almost certainly be back with Triple-A Sugar Land after the team's weekend series abroad, where he's maintained a .271 batting average while also striking out 31.9 percent of the time across 91 plate appearances.

Aaron Civale TB SPRays' Aaron Civale: Surrenders six runs Saturday
15m agoCivale allowed six runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday.
Civale made it through three scoreless frames before serving up an Andrew Benintendi three-run homer in the fourth. The right-hander returned for the fifth frame but gave up three straight hits for another run before departing with one out, and both runners he left on base later came around to score. Civale began the campaign with three quality starts among his first four appearances, but he's fallen off since then, yielding 11 runs across nine innings over his subsequent two starts. He'll try to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively lined up to be a home outing against the Mets next week.

17m agoLopez went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base Saturday against the Rays.
Lopez has at least one hit in six straight starts, and even as the White Sox's primary leadoff hitter, that's translated to only three runs scored. He also managed his first successful stolen base of the season after having been caught on four previous occasions. Through 85 plate appearances, Lopez has offered very little at the dish by maintaining a .219 batting average and by tallying only one extra-base hit.

Jonathan Cannon CHW SPWhite Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Allows four runs in no-decision
22m agoCannon pitched five innings in a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
Cannon was better than in his previous outing -- when he gave up six runs over 3.2 frames versus Minnesota -- and racked up a promising 15 swinging strikes, but he still allowed a constant stream of baserunners. The right-hander also gave up his first two homers of the campaign, accounting for three of the four runs against him. Cannon has given up 11 earned runs across 13.2 frames in his three starts, and it wouldn't be surprising if he's pushed out of the rotation once Mike Clevinger is ready to make his season debut for the big club.

The Lakers are still alive in the series against the Nuggets, and James became just the fourth player in NBA history to record a 30-point playoff game at the age of 39 or older, joining Reggie Miller, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on that exclusive list. James has surpassed the 25-point mark in each of the four games in this series, and the Lakers will need him to be at his best once again if they want to avoid elimination in Game 5 on Monday.

1h agoDavis provided 25 points (11-17 FG, 3-4 FT), 23 rebounds, six assists and one block in 42 minutes during Saturday's 119-108 victory over the Nuggets in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Davis was efficient from the field and active on the glass en route to posting his first 20-point, 20-rebound performance since the win over the Bucks on March 28. Davis has been magnificent in the series despite the fact the Lakers are down 1-3, as he's scored at least 25 points and grabbed double-digit rebounds in each of the four contests. He needs to continue at a high level as a two-way threat if the Lakers want to have a shot at pulling the upset in Game 5 of the series.

D'Angelo Russell LAL PGLakers' D'Angelo Russell: Bounces back in Game 4 win
1h agoRussell ended Saturday's 119-108 win over the Nuggets in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs with 21 points (8-15 FG, 4-8 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, four assists and one steal in 41 minutes.
Russell faced tons of scrutiny following a woeful effort in a Game 3 loss during which he finished scoreless (0-7 FG, 0-6 3Pt), but he bounced back admirably and reached the 20-point mark for the second time in this series. Russell will need to carry his hot hand into Game 5 if the Lakers want to avoid elimination Monday.

1h agoPorter chipped in 27 points (10-20 FG, 4-11 3Pt, 3-5 FT), 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal over 40 minutes during Saturday's 119-108 loss to the Lakers in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Porter was Denver's second-best player in this game, as he trailed only Nikola Jokic in scoring and rebounding while notching his second consecutive double-double in the series. Despite playing a secondary role on offense behind Jokic and Jamal Murray, Porter has scored at least 20 points while grabbing nine or more rebounds in his last three contests, a run he'll aim to continue in Game 5 on Monday.

1h agoJokic closed Saturday's 119-108 loss to the Lakers in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs with 33 points (10-20 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 11-11 FT), 14 rebounds, 14 assists, one block and one steal over 41 minutes.
Jokic has two triple-doubles and two double-doubles in the current series against the Lakers, but unlike in the previous three contests, he was unable to carry Denver to victory following yet another slow start. Jokic's individual numbers have been amazing in the series, though, as he's averaging 29.0 points, 15.3 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game. He'll aim to lift the Nuggets to close the series out Monday in Game 5.

1h agoMurray racked up 22 points (9-23 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 4-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists and one block over 39 minutes during Saturday's 119-108 loss to the Lakers in Game 4 of the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Murray's shooting woes continued in Game 4, as he finished with nine or fewer shots made while attempting 20-plus for the fourth consecutive contest. His numbers on the surface look good, as Murray is averaging 21.5 points per game while the Nuggets are 3-1 up in the series, but he's shooting a woeful 38 percent from the field. The Nuggets need him to be more efficient if they want to close the series out in Game 5 on Monday.

2h agoLyubushkin notched an assist and nine hits in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 4.
Lyubushkin has had a busy couple of days after making a round trip from Toronto to California to attend the birth of his daughter. The 30-year-old was able to avoid missing a game and now has two assists, 16 hits and three blocked shots over four playoff contests. Lyubushkin remains a steady part of the Maple Leafs' bottom four even as the team faces a 3-1 series deficit heading into Tuesday's Game 5.

Bertuzzi has a three-game point streak (one goal, two assists) after helping out on Mitch Marner's tally in the third period. Through four playoff outings, Bertuzzi has added 14 shots on net, 20 hits, six PIM and an even plus-minus rating while seeing top-six minutes.

Marner snapped a five-game goal drought with his third-period tally, but the Maple Leafs couldn't make a rally out of it. He's picked up just two points with seven shots on net, six hits and a plus-1 rating over four playoff contests, which is not enough production from one of the team's core players. Marner remains in a top-six role, but Toronto will need more out of him to keep its season alive beyond Tuesday's Game 5.

2h agoWoll stopped all five shots he faced in relief of Ilya Samsonov in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 4.
Woll played the third period and prevented the score from getting any worse. This was his first playoff action in 2024 after he got into four games during last year's postseason. Woll went 12-11-1 with a 2.93 GAA and a .907 save percentage over 25 regular-season appearances this year. The Maple Leafs have not announced their starting goalie for Game 5 on Tuesday yet, but it wouldn't be a shock if Woll got the nod since Samsonov has struggled against the Bruins.

2h agoSamsonov allowed three goals on 17 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Bruins in Game 4.
Samsonov lasted two periods before head coach Sheldon Keefe turned to Joseph Woll for the third. Woll stopped all five shots he faced, though the Bruins didn't apply much pressure while protecting a lead. Samsonov has gone 1-3 with 12 goals allowed over four playoff contests so far, so it's fair to question how much longer he'll be the starter with the Maple Leafs entering must-win mode. Keefe declined to name a starting goalie for Tuesday's Game 5 in his postgame comments.

Bruins' Mason Lohrei: Generates helper
2h agoLohrei logged an assist in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs in Game 4.
Lohrei was solid Saturday, including a play where he forced a turnover and fed James van Riemsdyk's for the Bruins' opening goal. The 23-year-old Lohrei has added two shots on net, three hits, three blocked shots and four PIM over two playoff contests. It's unclear if he'll keep his spot in the lineup since Derek Forbort (undisclosed) has been cleared to play and Matt Grzelcyk also awaits an opportunity to draw into the lineup. Parker Wotherspoon and Kevin Shattenkirk could also be in danger of being scratched with the Bruins' defense corps getting healthier.
