Mac Jones JAC QB
Jaguars' Mac Jones: Fifth-year option not picked up
19m agoThe Jaguars didn't pick up Jones' fifth-year contract option, AL.com reports.
While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and top running back Travis Etienne, the team elected not to do so with Jones, who the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The decision wasn't surprising, given that the value of the Alabama product's option was $25.6 million, the same figure that applied to Lawrence. With the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco of ESPN notes that Jones -- who was obtained from New England in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick -- is slated to compete with C.J. Beathard to be the team's top backup signal caller in 2024 and potentially beyond. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but the 25-year-old's 2023 campaign wound up with him being benched after Week 12 in favor of Bailey Zappe.

Odell Beckham Jr. BAL WR
Dolphins' Odell Beckham: Signing one-year deal in Miami
1h agoBeckham is signing a one-year contract with the Dolphins, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
It's a $3 million contract that can go up to $8.25 million with incentives, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com. Beckham signed a one-year, $15 million deal with Baltimore last offseason, and while his numbers were solid on a per-route and per-target basis, he never reached even 60 percent snap share after Week 1. He won't have to play too many snaps in Miami, where Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are the top WRs and head coach Mike McDaniel uses FB Alec Ingold a lot. The Dolphins had three or more WRs on the field for just 48 percent of their plays last year, the third-lowest rate in the league. On the other hand, Hill and Waddle tend to come off the field more often than other top receivers, which should give Beckham some chances to contribute in two-wide sets. Still, he's unlikely to have value in most fantasy leagues unless Hill or Waddle is unavailable (and even then it wouldn't necessarily be a sure thing).

Dawuane Smoot JAC DE
Bills' Dawuane Smoot: Headed to Buffalo
1h agoSmoot signed a one-year deal with the Bills on Friday, Alec White & Maddy Glab of the team's official site reports.
Smoot, who spent the past seven seasons with the Jaguars, will provide the Bills with added defensive line depth ahead of the 2024 campaign. The 2017 third-rounder is coming off a 2023 regular season in which he recorded just 10 tackles and a sack in 12 contests, but with Buffalo Smoot should have a chance to contribute as a rotational pass rusher.

Deion Jones CAR LB
Bills' Deion Jones: Bolsters Buffalo's defense
2h agoJones signed a one-year deal with the Bills on Friday, Alec White & Maddy Glab of the team's official site reports.
The 2016 second-rounder was an IDP factor throughout his six-year tenure with the Falcons, but over his last two campaigns Jones' tackle totals have dipped. In 13 regular-season games with the Panthers in 2023, the 29-year-old recorded 35 tackles, a sack and an interception. With the Bills, the LSU product will bolster the team's linebacker depth in 2024, and a bounce-back in production could be in order if Jones secures steady snaps in his new locale.

Jalen Tolbert DAL WR
Cowboys' Jalen Tolbert: Should have larger role in 2024
2h agoTolbert is in line for a larger role this season after working as the Cowboys' No. 4 WR in 2023, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports
After playing just 89 snaps on offense as a rookie, the 2022 third-round pick got a lot more playing time (477 snaps) in his second season, essentially splitting the No. 3 receiver role with Michael Gallup for much of the year. Gallup is now in Las Vegas and hasn't been replaced by a similar veteran or early draft pick, leaving Tolbert as the likely third WR behind entrenched starters CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. While the role won't necessarily entail a large quantity of targets, Tolbert at least would be positioned for a degree of fantasy value if Lamb were to miss any time with an injury.
-
Chase Claypool MIA WR
Bills' Chase Claypool: Links up with Buffalo
2h agoClaypool is signing a one-year contract with the Bills, Jonathan Jones of CBSSports.com reports.
Unable to make an impact in Chicago or Miami last season, Claypool now heads to his fourth NFL team for his fifth year in the league. It's about as good of a locale as he could've hoped for, as the Bills have a strong-armed franchise QB and questionable depth at WR. Claypool could perhaps serve as a deep threat off the bench even if his days as a starter are numbered.

Gary Sanchez MIL DH
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Available off bench
19m agoBrewers manager Pat Murphy said Friday that Sanchez (hamstring) is not yet 100 percent but is "good to go" and will be available off the bench, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Eric Haase is on the Brewers' taxi squad just in case, but it doesn't appear at this point that the team plans to add him to the active roster. Sanchez had to be removed from Tuesday's game against the Rays with right hamstring tightness, but it sounds like he could pinch-hit Friday, if needed.

Kyle Hendricks CHC SP
Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Slated for another rehab start
24m agoCraig Counsell said Friday that Hendricks (back) will start for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday as he continues his rehab assignment, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Hendricks allowed two runs while striking out seven over five innings with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday, with Counsell referring to the outing as "encouraging." However, given how badly Hendricks struggled with the big club before his back injury, the Cubs will give him another tune-up start at a higher level before considering sticking him back in the major-league rotation.
-
Justin Steele CHC SP
Cubs' Justin Steele: On track to return Monday
29m agoSteele (hamstring) will start Monday against the Padres as long as he gets through a bullpen session Saturday with no issues, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
The results of Steele's lone rehab start weren't great -- he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings -- but he feels good and has put his hamstring injury in the rearview mirror, which is the most important thing. Steele threw 63 pitches in his rehab outing Wednesday, so he will be somewhat limited from a workload perspective Monday, assuming he is indeed cleared to rejoin the Cubs' rotation that day.

Eddie Rosario WAS LF
Nationals' Eddie Rosario: Still has manager's confidence
1h agoRosario has remained a regular in the Nationals' lineup despite his early-season struggles, and manager Dave Martinez hasn't given up on the 32-year-old, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. "It's early," Martinez said Thursday. "You've got to give him a chance, you really do. I'm not going to sit him down yet right now. He's got to go out there and play. ... I've seen him play before. This kid can hit. He can put you on his shoulders."
At the moment, Rosario is handling the strong side of a platoon in right field while Lane Thomas (knee) is injured, but he's mired in an 0-for-27 slump that has sunk his slash line on the season to .086/.133/.157. Rosario has a history of slow starts, but even his xBA and xwOBA are in the bottom one percent of qualified hitters. Once Thomas gets healthy, the Nats may not be able to afford to stay patient with Rosario, especially with top prospect James Wood also making a strong case for a promotion to the majors.

Jorge Alcala MIN RP
Twins' Jorge Alcala: Recalled from Triple-A
1h agoThe Twins recalled Alcala from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
He's taking the roster and bullpen spot vacated by Caleb Boushley, who was sent back to St. Paul on Thursday. Alcala never deserved to be optioned in the first place, as he has given up just one unearned run on three hits through six appearances this season.
-
Drew Smyly CHC RP
Cubs' Drew Smyly: Cleared to resume throwing
1h agoSmyly (hip) has been cleared to begin playing catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Smyly hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks because of a right hip impingement but is ready to begin ramping things back up. The left-hander seems likely to require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Cubs' bullpen.
-
Terance Mann LAC SG
Clippers' Terance Mann: Present at shootaround
34m agoMann (leg) was seen at shootaround ahead of Friday's Game 6 against the Mavericks, Law Murray of The Athletic reports.
Mann is officially deemed questionable for Friday's contest due to a right lower leg contusion. However, Mann's presence at shootaround is a good sign he will suit up for the Clippers' win-or-go-home playoff game.

Buddy Hield PHI SF
76ers' Buddy Hield: Scores 20 points in Game 6 loss
1h agoHield amassed 20 points (6-10 FG, 6-9 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and one assist over 21 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hield went scoreless in two of the first three games of the series and was a DNP-CD in Games 4 and 5, but he provided a lift with his scoring off the bench in Game 6, particularly when the Sixers were in a complicated spot during the second and third quarters. Hield struggled in the series, but this 20-point effort will be a reminder of what he can do when he's given a consistent role on offense, regardless if it's as a starter or off the bench.
-
Joel Embiid PHI C
76ers' Joel Embiid: 39-point effort not enough Thursday
1h agoEmbiid provided 39 points (12-25 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 13-13 FT), 13 rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal over 40 minutes before fouling out of Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Embiid was clearly not 100 percent healthy throughout the series, and the limitations were more noticeable as the series progressed, but he still posted outstanding stat lines, scoring 29 or more points in four of the six contests. He also recorded three double-doubles and a triple-double, but he couldn't do the heavylifting on his own in the games where Tyrese Maxey struggled. Between the Play-In win over the Heat and the first-round series against the Knicks, Embiid averaged 31.6 points, 11.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.3 blocks across 41.0 minutes per game.
-
Tyrese Maxey PHI PG
76ers' Tyrese Maxey: Poor shooting in Game 6 loss
1h agoMaxey recorded 17 points (6-18 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 4-4 FT), five rebounds, five assists and two steals over 43 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 loss to the Knicks in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Maxey was coming off a heroic performance in Game 5, scoring 46 points and making some clutch buckets to keep the 76ers alive in the series. However, he wasn't able to deliver in Game 6 and finished with more field goal attempts than points scored. Maxey posted her lowest-scoring tally of the series in Thursday's loss, but he still averaged 29.8 points, 6.8 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game in the first round of the playoffs.
-
Josh Hart NY SF
Knicks' Josh Hart: Strong double-double in win
1h agoHart closed with 16 points (5-11 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 3-3 FT), 14 rebounds and seven assists over 46 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 win over the 76ers in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Hart finished just three assists away from recording a triple-double as the Knicks clinched a 4-2 series win over the 76ers, and the small forward played a prominent role on both ends of the court throughout the first round. Hart recorded three double-doubles in the series, but he also grabbed double-digit rebounds four times and scored 15-plus points in all but one of the six contests. Hart should have a tougher matchup in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and it wouldn't be surprising if he ends up being matched up against Pascal Siakam on some stretches.
-
Donte DiVincenzo NY SG
Knicks' Donte DiVincenzo: Fills stat sheet in Game 6
1h agoDiVincenzo racked up 23 points (8-18 FG, 5-9 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and two steals across 48 minutes during Thursday's 118-115 victory over Philadelphia in Game 6 of the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Jalen Brunson carried the Knicks to victory in this series-clinching win, but DiVincenzo deserves credit for stepping up when the team needed him the most. He was coming off a few subpar performances, as he had shot 8-for-28 from the field in the previous three games of the series, but he reached the 20-point mark for the first time in the current playoff run while also filling out the stat sheet as he normally does. The Knicks need DiVincenzo at his best if they also want to get past the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He averaged just 12.0 points while shooting 36.4 percent from the field in the first round.
-
Arturs Silovs VAN G
Canucks' Arturs Silovs: First goalie off Friday
1h agoSilovs was the first goalie to leave the ice Friday, Thomas Drance of The Athletic reports, indicating he'll tend the twine for Game 6 on the road against the Predators.
Silovs will make his third straight appearance in goal for the Canucks, having gone 1-1 with a 2.57 GAA and .904 save percentage in his previous two outings. Despite just 11 games of NHL experience, coach Rick Tocchet will stick with the 23-year-old Silovs ahead of Casey DeSmith.
-
Matt Martin NYI LW
Islanders' Matt Martin: Set for MRI
2h agoMartin (lower body) is expected to undergo an MRI in the coming days, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports Friday.
Martin was sidelined for the final two postseason contests due to his lower-body issue. Unless the MRI results come back with something more serious, the team may not provide much of an update heading into the offseason. Even if there is a long-term concern that carries into the 2024-25 campaign, Martin's lack of offensive upside means a potential absence is unlikely to impact the majority of fantasy players.
-
Charlie McAvoy BOS D
Bruins' Charlie McAvoy: Dishes out 11 hits
3h agoMcAvoy delivered 11 hits in a 2-1 Game 6 loss to Toronto on Thursday.
McAvoy may be adding some physicality to the lineup with his hits but is stuck in a nine-game goal drought. The defenseman did notch five helpers, including three with the man advantage, over that stretch. Still, the Bruins have managed just two goals in their last two games and will need more offensive output to come out on top in Game 7 on Saturday.
-
Scott Mayfield NYI D
Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Expects to be ready for 2024-25
3h agoMayfield, who suffered a fractured ankle in the season opener, should be ready for the 2024-25 campaign, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports Friday.
Mayfield told reporters that his ankle injury never fully healed, which forced him to undergo surgery in February. Despite his ankle problem, the veteran blueliner still appeared in 41 games this year, recording five assists, 70 hits and 36 shots in 41 contests.
-
Kevin Shattenkirk BOS D
Bruins' Kevin Shattenkirk: Pockets helpers
13h agoShattenkirk recorded an assist in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Maple Leafs in Game 6.
Shattenkirk was scratched for Game 5 on Tuesday, but he checked back in for Matt Grzelcyk in this contest. The helper was Shattenkirk's first point in the postseason, to go with three shots on net, six hits and two blocked shots over five appearances. The 35-year-old blueliner is stuck on the third pairing, so he shouldn't be counted on to make contributions on offense.
-
James van Riemsdyk BOS LW
Bruins' James van Riemsdyk: Registers assist
13h agoVan Riemsdyk logged an assist and two hits in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Maple Leafs in Game 6.
Van Riemsdyk has earned two points, five shots on net, three hits and a plus-1 rating over four games since he entered the Bruins' lineup. The 34-year-old winger is still seeing limited usage in the bottom six, so he's unlikely to produce steady offense moving forward, though he also gets time on the second power-play unit.
